This is a crewel curtain of about 1696 in the V&A, and the pattern is not woven at all: coloured wool has been stitched onto a finished linen ground, and you can see the plain weave of that ground continuing between and behind the leaf. The Jacquard head is what makes a field like this possible — every one of those medallions is individually controlled by punched cards rather than by a drawloom boy pulling cords, so a professional weaver could produce complex figured work to order in a small shop. Everything here is within reach of the mordant-and-madder process and indigo: reds and pinks from madder shifted by different mordants, browns and blacks from iron, the greens built from indigo overdyed with yellow. The most self-documenting textile there is. This sampler carries an alphabet in two cases, the numerals, a moral verse, a pictorial band — and, stitched into it, Maria Lalor, New York, March 3 1793. Samplers were school exercises, so they were made to be signed and dated, and they are consequently the yardstick against which unsigned needlework of a region is dated. Two cautions when you find one. The date is the date of the stitching, not of the frame or the glass.
