There is no line, no cased layer, and no applied stain doing the work—the gradient is intrinsic to the metal itself.

The standard orientation is ruby at the top, amber at the bottom. On a tumbler, vase, or pitcher, the rim and upper body blush deep fuchsia-red and the color fades down toward a honey or straw amber at the base and foot. How It Differs From Other Shaded Glass

It is equally important to separate amberina from glasses that merely use the same red. The gold-ruby chemistry that reddens amberina is the same colloidal-gold technology behind cranberry glass—but cranberry is a uniform red throughout, with no amber shading. And while the red end of amberina can superficially resemble the marigold-on-amber base of some carnival glass, carnival's color is a sprayed iridescent surface film, not a struck gradient running through the glass. The test is always the same: is the color a continuous shade within the glass, or a surface treatment on it?

The Chemistry: How the Color Is Struck

Understanding the chemistry is the single most useful thing a collector can learn about amberina, because it explains both why the genuine article looks the way it does and why so many imitations fall short. Amberina starts as an amber glass batch that also contains a tiny amount of gold—typically gold chloride, sometimes with a trace of tin as a reducing agent. As blown, the metal is a uniform amber; the gold is dissolved and colorless, contributing nothing to the color yet.

The red appears through striking: controlled reheating. When a finished or partly finished amber-with-gold object is reintroduced to the furnace or "glory hole" at the right temperature, the dissolved gold precipitates into microscopic colloidal particles that scatter and absorb light to produce a ruby red—exactly the colloidal-gold effect that gives cranberry and Bohemian gold-ruby their color. Because the glassworker reheats selected areas (usually the upper body and rim), only those areas strike red; the rest stays amber. The boundary between them is the soft, graded transition that defines amberina.

Why the Gradient Looks the Way It Does

Several consequences follow, and they are diagnostic. First, the shading is continuous and three-dimensional, varying with the thickness and reheating of the glass, so on a complex form the red pools naturally in thinner, more-reheated zones (crimped rims, pulled handles, the tips of applied feet). Second, the red end has the warm, slightly purplish "gold-ruby" tone of precipitated gold—not the orange-red of selenium glass or the flat painted red of a stained imitation. Third, on a thin-blown piece you can see the transition reading through the glass when you hold it up, because the color genuinely occupies the body, not a surface.

A note on the cheaper alternative: by the early twentieth century, glasshouses found that selenium could produce a red far more cheaply than gold, and much later "amberina-style" and reproduction glass is selenium-struck rather than gold-struck. Selenium amberina tends to a more orange, less purple-red, and the look can be slightly harsher; while not a perfect test on its own, an unusually orange "amberina" with a hard color break is a flag for later or pressed production rather than fine early gold-ruby art glass.

The Origin Story: New England Glass, 1883

Amberina was invented and patented at the New England Glass Company of East Cambridge, Massachusetts. The patent (US No. 287,533) was granted in 1883 to Joseph Locke, the English-born glass chemist and designer who was one of the most prolific art-glass innovators of the period—he is also credited with Pomona, Agata, and other New England art glasses. The name "Amberina" was the company's registered trade name for the new shaded ware, and the New England product is the benchmark against which all other amberina is judged.

The timing matters for dating. Genuine New England Glass amberina dates to roughly 1883 to 1888, when the firm relocated to Toledo, Ohio, and was reorganized—eventually becoming the Libbey Glass Company. So original-period East Cambridge amberina has a tight, well-documented window in the 1880s. What Original New England Amberina Looks Like

Quality is the hallmark. The metal is clear and bright, the gold-ruby is a rich, slightly purplish red, and the shading is subtle and well-controlled rather than abrupt. Surfaces may be glossy (the default) or given an acid satin / "frosted" finish, which softens the color into a matte glow. Mount Washington and the Licensed Makers

Amberina was successful enough that other firms wanted in, and the resulting licensing and litigation shaped the field. The most important second maker was the Mount Washington Glass Company of New Bedford, Massachusetts, which produced essentially the same shaded amber-to-ruby glass under its own trade name, "Rose Amber," to avoid infringing the New England trademark. For practical identification purposes, Mount Washington Rose Amber is amberina—the same chemistry and the same look—and the two are often catalogued together.

Beyond the two New England giants, the shaded look spread through the American glass industry of the 1880s–1890s, with various makers producing amberina or amberina-style wares, some under license and some not. Why the Maker Matters for Value

Documented New England, Mount Washington, and later signed Libbey pieces sit at the top; unattributed but clearly period hand-blown amberina is mid-market; and pressed-pattern and modern amberina is entry-level decorative glass. Plated Amberina: The Rarest Type

The most coveted and valuable amberina is Plated Amberina, a brief and brilliant New England Glass innovation also patented by Joseph Locke (1886). It is technically distinct from ordinary amberina and commands the highest prices in the field—genuine plated amberina pieces routinely reach four and occasionally five figures at auction.

Plated amberina is a cased (layered) glass: a fiery amberina exterior is plated over an opalescent, creamy, or chartreuse-white inner lining. The inner casing reflects light back through the shaded outer layer, intensifying the red and giving the glass an extraordinary depth and fire, and it usually also produces vertical ribbing, because the white lining was applied in a ribbed mold. The result is a ribbed, glowing, ruby-to-amber object with a pale fiery interior—unmistakable once seen.

Identifying Plated Amberina

Look for three things together: the creamy/opalescent inner lining visible at the rim and through the glass, the characteristic vertical ribs, and the intense, "lit-from-within" amberina shading on the exterior. Reverse Amberina and Baccarat Rose Amberina

Two named variants confuse buyers often enough to deserve their own section. Reverse amberina simply inverts the normal orientation: instead of red at the top fading to amber at the bottom, the amber is at the top and the red pools at the base. This was achieved by reheating the lower portion of the object rather than the upper, and it is most associated with certain makers and forms (notably some tumblers and pressed wares). Reverse amberina is legitimate and collectable; the point for identification is that an "upside-down" gradient is not automatically a fake—it may be a deliberate reverse piece. What matters is that the shading is still a genuine struck gradient within the glass.

Baccarat "Rose Amberina" is the famous French interpretation. The great French house Baccarat made a shaded amber-to-red glass, often in a Swirl or "Bambou" (bamboo) pattern, that the American market came to call Rose Amberina. Baccarat's version is high-quality continental art glass, sometimes acid-stamped with the Baccarat mark, and is prized in its own right. It is a reminder that the shaded look crossed the Atlantic and that a fine "amberina" swirl pitcher may in fact be French rather than American.

Don't Confuse Color Names

The proliferation of trade names—Amberina, Rose Amber, Rose Amberina, plated amberina—reflects trademark maneuvering more than chemistry. Functionally, the transparent amber-to-ruby shaded glass is "amberina" whatever a particular firm called it, and your identification should rest on the physical evidence (transparent body, struck gold-ruby gradient, quality of metal and applied work) rather than on a hoped-for name. The Libbey Reissues of 1917

The most important single fact for dating amberina is the Libbey reissue. The New England Glass Company became the Libbey Glass Company after its move to Toledo, and in 1917 Libbey reintroduced amberina as a deliberate revival of the famous nineteenth-century ware. Crucially, much of this reissue ware was signed, which makes the Libbey amberina the one category that can frequently be authenticated by mark alone.

Libbey amberina of the 1917 era is high-quality and faithful to the original concept—transparent, gold-struck, ruby-to-amber—made in vases, bowls, pitchers, and decorative forms. The signature is the key. Libbey used an acid-etched mark, commonly the word "Libbey" in script, sometimes within a circle or accompanied by a small saber/sword device, applied to the base or pontil area. A genuine acid-etched Libbey signature on a shaded amber-to-ruby piece is strong evidence for the 1917 reissue and is exactly the kind of documentation that protects a buyer.

Reading the Libbey Signature

Examine the mark carefully under a loupe and raking light. A genuine acid-etched signature is frosted, slightly recessed, and crisp, with the matte texture of acid etching rather than the shiny scratch of a hand-engraved or the raised look of a printed fake. Be cautious: because the Libbey mark adds so much value, it is forged onto unmarked old glass and onto modern reproductions alike. A signature should be consistent with the quality of the glass; a crude "Libbey" scratched onto a clumsy, harshly colored piece is a warning, not a guarantee. Not all old amberina is hand-blown art glass. The color was so popular that it was applied to pressed (molded) pattern glass in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and recognizing pressed amberina is essential because it is a different—and generally lower—tier of the market than the blown art glass.

The classic pressed amberina pattern is Daisy & Button, the ubiquitous Victorian pressed motif of buttons set in a field of stylized daisies. Daisy & Button was made in amberina by several manufacturers, producing the recognizable shaded red-to-amber pressed bowls, cruets, toothpick holders, hats, slippers, and novelties that fill the middle and lower end of the amberina market. Other pressed patterns—inverted thumbprint, diamond and swirl molds, and various ribbed designs—also appear in amberina. Pressed amberina is genuine period glass and collectable, but it is mold-made and far more common than the blown art glass, and it should be priced accordingly. Telling Pressed From Blown

The distinction is usually easy with practice. Pressed amberina shows mold seams, crisp molded pattern detail with a faintly grainy pressed surface, and a flat or molded (rather than blown-and-tooled) base, often with no pontil. Blown amberina shows a smooth, fire-polished surface, applied and tooled handles and feet, crimped or ruffled rims worked by hand, and frequently a pontil mark on the base. A shaded red-to-amber bowl in a sharp Daisy & Button pattern with mold seams is pressed; a free-form ruffled vase with an applied amber foot and a polished pontil is blown.

Forms, Shapes, and Decoration

Amberina was made across the full Victorian repertoire, and the form helps with both period and maker. The commonest blown forms are tumblers, water pitchers, and vases, followed by bowls, cruets, celery vases, finger bowls, creamers and sugars, spooners, and the small novelty pieces (toothpick holders, salts) that survive in quantity. Punch cups, pitchers with applied reeded amber handles, and ruffled or crimped-rim bowls are especially characteristic.

Decoration is often in the glass itself—the shading is the ornament—but several treatments recur. Inverted thumbprint (a field of regular concave dimples molded into the body) is extremely common and amplifies the shading by varying the glass thickness. Enamel and Gilt Decoration

Higher-end amberina, particularly Mount Washington and some European pieces, can carry enameled and gilded decoration—painted florals, gilt rims, and the like—turning the shaded blank into a fully decorated art object. As with all decorated antique glass, original enamel should show appropriate wear consistent with the piece, and crisp, unworn "enamel" on a heavily worn body is a flag for later embellishment. Marks, Signatures, and Labels

Amberina is, for the most part, an unmarked glass, and this is the central frustration—and opportunity—of the field. The original 1880s New England and Mount Washington art glass was essentially never factory-signed, so the great majority of genuine early amberina carries no mark at all. The absence of a signature is completely normal and is not evidence against authenticity.

The major exceptions are worth memorizing. Libbey signed much of its 1917 reissue with an acid-etched "Libbey" script mark, the single most useful amberina signature. Baccarat sometimes acid-stamped its Rose Amberina with the Baccarat mark. Some twentieth-century revival makers—including Fenton and various studio and reproduction houses—marked their amberina-style pieces with their own logos or paper labels. A mark, where present, should be read as a dating and attribution anchor and cross-checked against the quality and character of the glass.

Paper Labels and Their Limits

Original paper or foil labels were used by various makers and, being fragile, are usually long gone; a surviving original label is a welcome bonus but, like all labels, is easily transferred or faked onto later glass. Treat a paper label as supporting evidence, never as proof, and weigh it against the physical tells of the glass. Reproductions and the Modern Market

Amberina has been reproduced more or less continuously since its own heyday, and the modern market is thick with later glass wearing the shaded look. Knowing the main waves of reproduction is the best defense.

The twentieth-century revival is the first category, and much of it is legitimate, attributable, collectable glass that is simply not Victorian. Libbey's 1917 reissue is the most important; beyond it, Fenton, Blenko, and other American art-glass houses produced amberina and amberina-style wares through the mid and late twentieth century, often very well made and frequently marked. These are not "fakes"—they are genuine products of their own era—but they are routinely mis-sold as nineteenth-century, and the date matters enormously for value. The second category is outright reproduction: modern pressed and blown amberina, much of it imported, made specifically to imitate the old look for the decorative and antique trade. These pieces are typically selenium-struck (a more orange, less purplish red), often pressed in molds copying old patterns (Daisy & Button novelties, cruets, baskets), and may carry harsh, abrupt color breaks rather than the soft gradient of fine early work. The Microwave and Reheating Trap

One persistent hazard is worth a direct warning: because amberina's red is a struck color, plain amber gold-glass can sometimes be re-struck red by reheating, and stories circulate of people "creating" or deepening amberina shading by heating amber glass. Any piece whose shading looks freshly or unevenly struck, or that pairs a suspiciously vivid gradient with an otherwise plain modern form, should be treated with suspicion. Genuine period amberina shows its age in the wear, the form, the applied work, and the quality of the metal, not just in the presence of a red-to-amber blush.

How to Tell Genuine from Fake

Pulling the diagnostics together, a short sequence will resolve most amberina questions. No single test is conclusive; authenticity is a convergence of several.

First, confirm it is amberina at all: the glass must be transparent and shade amber-to-ruby as a continuous gradient within the body. An opaque piece is Burmese or peachblow, not amberina; a uniform red is cranberry; a surface iridescence is carnival. Second, judge the red: fine early gold-ruby amberina is a rich, warm, slightly purplish red with a soft transition, while a hard, orange, abruptly broken red points to later selenium or pressed production.

Read the Base and the Applied Work

Third, turn the piece over. A polished or rough pontil and an applied, tooled foot indicate hand-blown art glass; a flat molded base with mold seams and no pontil indicates pressed production. Fourth, examine applied parts: genuine blown amberina has amber handles, feet, and rim trails (the thick applied glass did not strike red), worked and tooled by hand. Sixth, weigh the whole for consistency and honest age. Real period amberina shows wear where wear belongs: footrim abrasion, fine handling scratches, gilt or enamel worn from high points but intact in recesses. A brilliant, flawless, seam-bottomed piece with a harsh gradient and no wear is modern. As always, the convergence is the proof: transparent amber-to-ruby gold-struck gradient, blown construction with amber applied work and a pontil, period form, appropriate wear, and a mark that fits the glass. On value, the hierarchy is clear. Plated amberina sits at the very top, with fine examples reaching well into four figures and rarities beyond. Documented New England and Mount Washington Rose Amber blown art glass and signed Libbey reissues form the strong middle-to-upper tier, with price driven by form, size, quality of shading, applied decoration, and condition. Unattributed but clearly period blown amberina is solidly collectable mid-market glass. Pressed amberina (Daisy & Button and the like) and twentieth-century revival pieces are entry-level, and modern reproductions are decorative-only. Care is conservative: hand-wash only, in lukewarm water with mild soap, supporting the body rather than lifting by a handle or rim; never put amberina in a dishwasher, which can etch and "sicken" the surface and stress applied parts.
