The decoration is not painted at all: the band around the shoulder is stamped into the clay with a roulette, and the beast is a separately sprig-moulded relief pressed from a mould and applied. The colour comes from an iron wash under the salt glaze, giving the tan-brown "tiger" surface, and the pitted orange-peel texture across the whole pot is the salt glaze itself, exactly as on the American grey pots. The hinged pewter lid is a Continental habit almost never found on American work.
