Shell is cut from the nacreous layer of a marine shell, so it carries that shell’s own growth banding — the faint parallel striations running across this blank — and no two pieces repeat. That is the quickest separation from the imitations, because a cast pearlescent plastic comes out of a mould and therefore repeats exactly. Two more checks that cost nothing: shell stays cool against the lip for a moment where plastic warms almost at once, and the rim of a turned shell blank usually shows fine concentric tool marks and a slight taper. Military and service buttons are the one metal family that introduces itself, because the device is a badge and not an ornament — a helmet with crossed blades belongs to an armed service, and the branches flanking it are a standard emblematic pairing, so the wearer’s corps is already narrowed before any backmark is read. Two cautions on gilt of this kind. The colour is a thin gilt skin over a copper alloy, so wear appears first on the highest points, here the helmet crest and the rope rim; crisp gilding across every high point of an otherwise worn button usually means it has been re-plated. Three things to check on any button of this type. The steel should be individual studs, separately set and each catching the light at its own angle, rather than a single pierced strip stamped to imitate them. The enamel should show fine crazing and small firing irregularities, not the flat, even surface of a printed transfer. And cut steel rusts, so losses around the border are the normal condition fault here and are very often made up with later replacement studs that sit slightly proud. Both are Firmin and Sons of London, and in both cases the back dates the button far more tightly than the front does. The recorded find on the left is placed to 1876–1894 because “153” is a street number: Firmin traded at 153 The Strand for those eighteen years, and the address travelled on the backstamp. The one on the right is placed to roughly 1850–1900 on the arrangement of the name alone. That is the working rule for British livery and uniform buttons. The crest identifies a family or a regiment that may have used the same device for a century and tells you little about age; the maker’s name, address and the way the lettering is laid out changed on a schedule that has been written down. Read the back first. Note also that both shanks are applied loops fixed into the crown of a domed one-piece back — the construction you should expect on work of this period, and a moulded shank formed in one piece with the body is a signal to look again.

Back Markings and Stamps

These read as the same technique and are not, and the difference shows at the surface rather than in the picture. On the painted button the pigment sits on its ground, so the brushwork carries a slight relief that catches raking light, and it fails by wearing through — check the highest points of the figure, the shoulder and the hat brim, before anything else. On the enamelled one the colour is glass, fused and fired to the metal, so it is flush and level with the rim and it fails by chipping and crazing instead. The distinction is worth holding onto commercially, because a repainted button is difficult to detect and a re-enamelled one is close to impossible, which is why examples like these are judged on the integrity of the border, the setting and the mount at least as much as on the image itself.

Genuine cut steel is separate pieces, each with its own facets and its own slightly different orientation to the light, and it will have losses — a stud or two gone, with rust staining creeping into the shell around the empty rivet hole.
